Community Helper
For Community Helper week we learned all about those special people in our community that helps our community. We learned all about mailmen, police officers, firefighters, doctors and vets. Students would recall information from books and write sentences about each of the different community helpers.
After we finished reading each of the books students would sort the books by fiction and nonfiction.

At the end of the week we had a community helper dress up day, where students would dress up like someone in our community that helps us.
Soil
Our class took a look at soil. Each student brought in soil from somewhere close to their house. We talked about the different types of soil, why we need it, and where we find soil. The students had their own soil information book that they filled out. Students wrote about how their soil felt, smelt and what they saw in their soil. Then we took a closer look at our soil using magnifying glasses. At the end of the week when we were all done learning about soil we went outside and put the soil where soil belongs.

Saftey First
It is always important to learn about being safe. So we went to the science lab where we read the book Officer Buckle and Gloria. Officer Buckle and Gloria taught students from the book all these safety rules to help keep their school safe.
In the science lab we looked at pictures and sorted them by safe and not safe. The students did a great job recognizing how they can be safe in the science lab and at school.
Later we reread the book, this time as we were reading the book we were making a t-chart of how we can be safe and what would not be safe.
Students then got their science journals and wrote and drew about how they can be safe. This student is being safe by not playing with the stove.

Apples
For letter A week we learned all about Apples!
We read the book 10 Apples up on Top by Dr. Seuss. Students then drew a picture of their face. Next they made apples from construction paper and glued them on top of their head.
Each day we would read books about apples. Then we would draw a picture or make an apple from construction paper. Each student would have a sentence cut apart and we would put it together in the correct order. Students were learning about words in a sentence and how words need spaces.
Here are some of the wonderful apple books we read during the week. At the end of the week, the students sorted the apples they brought to school and then we got to eat the apples. They are yummy!

Then we were write together facts we learned about that animal. Some days the students would come and dictate a sentence to me about that ocean animal and I would attach it to their work.

Gingerbread Man Hunt
During the first couple weeks of school we were learning our way around the school and who works in those special rooms like the cafeteria, nurses office and the office. We read the book The Gingerbread Man. Then we made our own gingerbread man. We asked the cafeteria ladies if they would bake it for us but to be careful we did not want him to run away. The next day, we went back to the cafeteria to pick him up to eat and HE RAN AWAY! We looked for him all over the school. Here are some of the notes we found around the school.
After we finished looking around the school we came back to our classroom and found him in our room!
