Garden and bunnies!

Today my class spent some time with our 3rd grade book buddies. Since the weather is perfect we took our kids outside with our journals to our school garden. The students observed the changes that has happened in our garden. Then we had them sit down and write about the garden (what gardens need and have). As the students were walking around looking at the different plants they found baby bunnies! They were so excited to see the small bunny faces in their burrow.

Butterflies

After learning about butterflies I had the students write in their journals about butterflies. I asked them to write two or three sentences that teach me something about butterflies. Here is the work by two of my students.

Ants, Ants, Ants

As a class we read the book Are You An Ant? Then I had the students draw and write about ants in their science journals. Here is some of their work.

The grasshopper hopped where?!

Today we read the book The Grasshopper Hopped. It's a cute book about a grasshopper finding the best place for it to hop around. My class decided to be creative when they were asked to draw and write about where the grasshopper hopped. Here are some of my favorites.

Measuring bugs!

This week in math we are learning about measuring things. We spent one day measuring how many butterflies tall we are and comparing us to our friend (see picture below).

Today I let the students draw an insect (most decided to draw a butterfly) then we used cubes to see how long our insect was using cubes. Check out their work below.

Give me half!

This week we have been learning about fair share and half/whole. The first day we read the book Bears Berries. It is a short book about two bear sharing berries equally. The students got to practice with berries and sharing fair or equally.

The next day we read the book Give Me Half where the two kids did not want to share fairly with each other. We discussed how sharing equally looks like by drawing shapes and drawing a line down the middle to show half.

As a fun activity we made two pizzas. Then we cut one pizza in half and labels each side as 1/2. Then we cut the other pizzas into fourths. Then the students labeled each part. Here are some examples.

Zoo

The first week of zoo learning we made a list of zoo animals. Each student named an animal they could see in a zoo. Then they got to draw that animal. After everyone was finished we put the animals in ABC order.

On another day we read the book Who's In the Zoo? Where the animals all wished they had something from a different animal. We had to read the clues and make a prediction about what animal they were talking about. Then I asked the students to write two or three clues that describe an animal. Here are some of their work.

Zoo fun!

We have been spending lots of time learning about the zoo.

We read the book Felecity Floo Went to te Zoo. It is a cute book about a little girl who went to the zoo sick and got the animals sick. I asked the students to draw and write about animal being sick at the zoo. Here are some of my favorites.
